GREENWOOD, Indiana – Seniors Eric Elkus and Howie Smith of the Earlham College baseball team have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Hitter and Pitcher of the Week respectively for games played from March 13-19.
Elkus, who is being honored as HCAC Hitter of the Week for the second consecutive week, carried a .600 batting average while driving in 13 runs in leading Earlham to a 3-1 record last week.
In the Quakers' lone loss of the week (20-14 to Heidelberg), Elkus drove in four runs on two doubles while scoring three runs. The Edgewood, Kentucky, native followed up that performance by tallying seven hits and one home run in Earlham's three-game sweep of Wilmington. In game two of that series, Elkus drove in six RBIs.
In total, Elkus tallied nine hits including five extra base hits, drove in 13 runs, and had a 1.067 slugging percentage.
Smith, who is receiving HCAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career, allowed one earned run in a complete-game, 10-1 victory over Wilmington in game two of a three-game series this past weekend.
Smith allowed just six hits while striking out eight batters compared to only one walk in the win. He also came in relief against Heidelberg, pitching one inning.
The Quakers host Wittenberg for a single game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
