RICHMOND, Ind. - The Earlham College men's basketball team fell in non-conference play to Centre College on Monday night by a final score of 93-80.
The Colonels of Centre College, out of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), jumped out to an early 8-2 lead four minutes into the ballgame. Earlham found their groove offensively over the next few minutes and drew within a point at 12-11 following a Chainey Zolman three-pointer.
Both teams battled back-and-forth in the opening period of play. Earlham trailed by as much as 11 points with just over a minute to play in the half at 45-34, however the Quakers closed the gap in the final minute of play and trailed by just five points at the intermission, 45-40, following a pair of triples from Blake Bonin and Isaiah Waire.
Earlham College kept the game within striking distance for most of the second half. Austin Doliboa converted a layup from Bonin at the 14:33 mark that drew EC within five points at 54-49. Centre answered with a swift 5-0 run of their own that pushed their lead back to double digits.
For the game Earlham shot 43.3% (26-59) from the field and the Quakers made 7 of 18 (38.9%) three-point attempts. EC had a strong showing as a team from the foul line, converting 21 of 27 attempts, good enough for a 77.8% clip. Centre College made 34-51 (66.7%) of their field-goal attempts and the Colonels also shot a high percentage from the charity stripe, making 19 of 24 attempts (79.2%). Centre outrebounded the Quakers 33-26 but Earlham mananged to pressure the Colonels into 18 turnovers.
Chainey Zolman led EC with 18 points and six rebounds. Darrell Hutchison Jr. contributed 15 points in the game on the strength of 6-11 shooting. Isaiah Waire provided a spark off the Earlham bench with nine points and two assists.
Earlham stands 3-7 on the season and Centre improved to 4-5. The Quakers will return to action on Saturday December 30 against Adrian. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
