Men’s hoops controls the glass and dominates Kenyon, 69-59

GAMBIER, Ohio – A 59-31 rebounding advantage for Earlham College and double-digit scoring performances from four Quaker men's basketball players propelled Earlham to a 69-59 win over Kenyon College, in a non-conference matchup Monday night at Tomsich Arena.

Senior Darrell Hutchison Jr. led Earlham (1-2) with 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. Juniors Blake Bonin and Kenneth Stalling Jr. chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively. First year Conner Hubbard came off the bench to chart a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Quakers.

Junior Tarig Eldosougi and senior Isaiah Waire each pulled down 10 rebounds in Earlham's victorious effort.

Earlham's rebounding effort included a 20-12 advantage on the offensive glass, which converted to 22 second-chance points for the Quakers.

The Quakers held a one-point lead, 29-28, over Kenyon (0-4) coming out of the halftime break, and the game was tied, 51-51, as late as the 8:17 mark of the second half.

Bonin broke the deadlock with a jumper, and after a missed Kenyon 3-point attempt at the other end of the floor Hutchison came back with a bucket of his own to give the Quakers a 55-51 advantage with 6:55 on the clock.

Kenyon cut the margin to three points on a pair of occasions, but a pair of Eldosougi jumpers sandwiched around a basket by Waire extended the Earlham lead to nine, 63-54.

From there, the Quakers held the Lords at bay with a 6-of-6 effort at the free-throw line over the final minute-plus, with Waire, Stalling, and Bonin all connecting on foul shots.

Earlham finished the game with a 41.9 percent (26-of-62) shooting performance from the floor, buoyed by its 15-of-28 (.536 FG%) effort in the second half alone. Defensively, the Quakers held the Lords to just 32.9 percent (23-of-70) shooting from the field.

The Quakers will take a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday before resuming their slate on Sunday, Nov. 25, when they host Adrian College. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in the Druley Performance Gym.
