RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College men's soccer team opens the final week of the 2017 regular season by traveling to first place Transylvania University for a 7 p.m. contest.
The Teams: Earlham and Transylvania. The Quakers are 3-11-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play after 2-1, come-from-behind win over Franklin College in overtime on Saturday. The Pioneers are 13-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the only loss coming at the hands of Manchester University on Oct. 14.
The Coaches: Sam Byrd enters his third season as head men's soccer coach at his alma mater. The 2003 alumnus, who led the Quakers to the HCAC Tournament berth in 2015, served as an assistant coach for longtime head coach Roy Messer for two seasons prior to being promoted to head coach in May of 2015. Matt Vogel, a 2008 Transylvania alumnus, is in his fourth season leading his alma mater.
The Players: Seniors Nicholas Dey and Vojislav Tatarevic have both scored three goals to lead the Quakers offensively while junior Yuki Adams, sophomore Micah Roland and freshman Drew Fitzgibbon have each scored twice. Riley Calhoon and Charlie Wend combine to score 20 of Transylvania's 34 goals on the season.
Recent History: Earlham is 2-5-2 against Transylvania since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season. The Pioneers won last year's meeting 2-1 in Richmond.
HCAC Tournament Implications: Earlham can clinch a berth in the HCAC Tournament with two wins and one loss from Anderson University in the last week of the season.
