Sam Byrd enters his third season leading the Earlham College men's soccer program in 2017.

The Quakers finished 6-11 overall during the 2016 season, but notched a notible victory over in-state rival Wabash College on Sept. 7.

Byrd led Earlham to a 9-7-1 mark in his first season as well as a trip back to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament. Senior Jacob Ebbs and sophomore Nicholas Dey earned spots on the All-HCAC First Team while TiQi Brown and Mussa Ibrahim were named Second Team All-HCAC.

Byrd is no stranger to the program having spent two seasons as an assistant coach. Byrd returned to the coaching staff in 2013 to help champion the Quakers to their first conference title since 1986.

Prior to combining with former head coach Roy Messer, Byrd coached the Richmond High School boy’s soccer team to four consecutive sectional championships in that many years culminating withwhile the first North Central Conference Championship the Red Devils had won since 2005. Prior to being the head coach at Richmond, Byrd was an assistant coach at Earlham from 2005-08.

Byrd is a Certified Sports and Conditioning Specialist through the American Fitness Professionals and Associates and teaches in the AWPE department.

Byrd graduated from Earlham in 2003 with a degree in sociology and athropology. He was a four-year letterman and a part of a nationally-ranked Quaker squad and North Coast Athletic Conference title contending program.

Byrd resides in Richmond.
