Earlham’s 1955 baseball squad won the first conference title of any kind as the Quakers tied for the Hoosier Collegiate Conference crown with an 8-3 record. Overall, the team finished 9-4 and coach George Oberle was named HCC Coach of the Year.
Catcher John Mutchner was the team’s Most Valuable Player. He was All-HCC along with Jim Coulter, Sam DeCou, while Bill Cope, Jerry Michener and Gary Snyder were honorable mention all-conference. Coulter was 5-2 as a pitcher for the Quakers that season, while Snyder was 4-2. Coulter’s 4-0 win over Manchester in the final game of the season enabled the Quakers to earn a piece of the conference title.
Mutchner, Cope, Coulter, DeCou and fellow teammates Paul Harris and Herb Sawyer along with Oberle are all in the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame as individuals.
