As an All-American cross country runner, Dennis Hinkle helped lead the Quakers to high finishes at the 1962 and the 1963 NAIA Championships. As a junior, he recorded Earlham’s best ever individual finish at a national meet with his tenth place performance as the Quakers finished eighth in team standings. The following year Hinkle ran in just one regular-season meet, but the captain returned to aid Earlham to seventh place at the NAIA meet — the Quakers’ best-ever team finish at a national cross country competition. Individually, he placed forty-fifth as a senior. The distance running specialist lettered four years in both cross country and track. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Earlham, Hinkle continued on to earn M.Ed., MS and Ph.D. degrees from Toledo. He has served as assistant provost and professor at Virginia Tech from 1972-90 and as a dean and professor at Butler from 1990-93. Hinkle was also the Dean of the College of Education at Townson State. His publications include two textbooks on statistics and more than 60 articles in journals on a variety of topics related to statistics, research methodology, assessment and accountability.
