As a multi-dimensional athlete trying almost any sport he could at Earlham from 1953-56, Dieter Schneppat played basketball in 1954, ran track in 1955 and played baseball and volleyball in 1956. In addition to his sports sampling, Schneppat played four years of soccer and was a first-team all-conference selection in each of those years. He was an honorable mention All-American and second-team player in 1955 and 1956 respectively. He accomplished these things playing soccer for the first time in his life and using it to “get in shape” for basketball. In his senior season Schneppat was invited to the Olympic Team tryouts in Chicago. After graduating from Earlham, he went on to play professional basketball and soccer in Germany.
