John Guthrie was a four-year midfielder on the Earlham men's soccer team, including the Quakers' 1963 NAIA co-national championship squad. He was named an NSCAA Honorable Mention All-American in 1961 as a sophomore and was the team's most valuable player, as Earlham men's soccer cruised to a 5-2-3 overall record with a 4-1-0 mark in conference play. Guthrie missed Earlham's 1962 season while studying in England, where he played with the University College London first team. He rejoined the Earlham squad in 1963 and guided the Quakers to a 9-1-1 overall record on his way to earning team MVP honors.
