M. O. Ross came to Earlham in the fall of 1924, and he served as the football coach from 1925-1936 and the track coach from 1925-1928. The Earlham football field is named for him. He was president of Butler University from 1942 to 1962 and was awarded honorary degrees from Kentucky Wesleyan, Wabash, Indiana Central, Butler and many other colleges. As a collegian, he was a member of the All-Kentucky football team. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Kentucky Wesleyan and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1936.
