He was a member of the United States Olympic Team as a competitor in the marathon at the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland. In his Earlham days, he was a three-year captain in cross country and senior captain of the track team, earning a total of eight varsity letters. Jones was unbeaten in regular-season competition during his junior and senior years in the mile run, two-mile run and cross country events. In 1937, he finished ninth at the National Collegiate Cross Country Meet. His three-mile time of 14:34 was Earlham’s best through 1954.
