Wendell Stanley came to Earlham in 1922. In 1925, he was an all-Indiana selection while playing end and quarterback for the football team. In 1946, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the isolation of a virus. The Wendell M. Stanley Senior Athlete-Scholar Award was established in his honor in 1968. Wendell earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1929, and he received an honorary science degree from Earlham in 1938.
