DAYTON, Ohio – The Earlham College men's tennis team opened its 2016 spring season with a 9-0 sweep of Otterbein University at the Dayton Center Courts on Friday.
The Quakers swept all three doubles flights. Senior Jack Ventura-Cruess and sophomore Vitalii Stadnyk fell behind a break midway through their first doubles matches, but battled back to win 8-5 over Will Willson and David Seckel. At second doubles, sophomore Gleb Babikov and freshman Adarsh Singh won 8-4 over Ben Keen and Zach McDivitt. Sophomore Vojislav Tatarevic and freshman Nicola Manni, both of which played on the men's soccer team in the fall, won an 8-1 decision at third doubles over Tyler Wharton and Perry Williams.
Stadnyk, the reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Most Valuable Player, won his first singles match 6-4, 6-1. Manni closed out the match for the Quakers with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williams at fourth singles. For his match-clinching victory, Manni was named "Man of the Match".
Singh and Babikov both fell in first sets at two and three singles respectively, but battled back to win set two. Because the match was already decided, the two played a super tiebreak for the first set. Singh won his third set 10-5 while Babikov won his tiebreaker 10-6.
Ventura-Cruess and Tararevic won their fifth and sixth singles matches in straight sets.
The Quakers now stand at 1-0 on the season and return to action on Tuesday at Wabash. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
