Kalamazoo, Michigan – The Earlham College men's tennis team concluded play at the 2017 ITA Central Region Championships this Saturday. This was the final tournament for the non-traditional fall season.
On Friday, senior Vitalii Stadnyk defeated Kalamazoo's Zachary Ray and Oberlin's Manickam Manickam en route to the third round. Sophomore Fernando Bulnes Aramburu lost the first set 6-2 against Franciscan's John Gallagher but battled back, winning the second set in a tiebreaker. Bulnes Aramburu played an impressive third set as he didn't drop a game to take the match. He fell in the second round to the eighth seed from Denison, Vlad Rotnov.
In doubles Stadnyk paired with freshman Brandon Giordanelli to compete. In the first round the duo faced Fukamachi and Rungaseng from Ohio Wesleyan and were defeated 8-5. In the backdraw, the pair squared off against a team from Case Western Reserve but fell 8-5 once again.
Stadnyk was the lone Quaker remaining in play on Saturday. In the third round, he faced Augustana's Caio Rezende. The match was close early on, but Rezende gained momentum and defeated Stadnyk 6-3, 6-0.
The men's team now enters its off-season until spring semester when the Quakersl open up play against Hope College on February 10th.
