GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The final match of the night – a three-set cliffhanger at no. 1 singles – decided the outcome as Earlham College men's tennis dropped a 5-4 decision to DePauw University, Thursday night at DePauw's Indoor Tennis & Track Center.
With the match score knotted at 4-4, DePauw's Greg Frauenheim posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Vitalii Stadnyk, clinching the outcome for the Tigers.
Earlham (3-2) was trailing 2-1 coming out of doubles play, after Stadnyk and Vojislav Tatarevic logged an 8-6 triumph over Frauenheim and Bryce McClanahan at no. 1 doubles.
After DePauw (1-5), who entered the match ranked ninth in the ITA Division III Central Region rankings, opened singles play with a victory at no. 5, the Quakers responded with a win at no. 3 singles to keep pace. Earlham later notched triumphs at no. 4 and no. 6 singles to tie things up, leaving Stadnyk and Frauenheim to finish out the deciding matchup.
Earlham men's tennis is back on the courts on Sunday, Feb. 25, when it travels to Danville, Ky., to face Centre College. That match will start at 1:00 p.m.
