Men’s tennis closes regular season with wins over Franklin, Holy Cross College

Jason Lawson

RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College wrapped up its 2018-19 regular season with a pair of 9-0 victories over Franklin College and Holy Cross College (Ind.), on Saturday afternoon at the Earlham College Tennis Courts.

With his two wins in doubles play on Saturday, junior Jason Lawson tied Earlham's single season record for doubles victories with his 20-4 doubles ledger. He matched the 20-win doubles record put together by Jack Ventura-Cruess during the 2012-13 season.

Aitor Zerdilas-Herrera and Nikolaos Trikkas-Psomas had to battle their way to an 8-6 victory over Franklin's Blake Amonett and Alex Pollard at no. 1 doubles, but that was as much of a challenge the Quakers received in their win over the Grizzlies. The no. 2 and no. 3 doubles matches were won by 8-0 and 8-2 scores, and all six singles matches were straight-set victories. Only in Nicola Manni's no. 4 singles win over Dean Elrod, 6-3, 6-1 did any Franklin player win as many as three games in a set.

Earlham came out on top of all three doubles matches, with the toughest battle among the three taking place at no. 3 doubles where Trikkas-Psomas and Manni eventually triumphed, 8-6, over the HCC tandem of Ben Beekman and Jake Brown.

The Quakers claimed all six singles matches in straight sets, but not before Aleksandr Sergeev had to fight his way to a 7-5, 6-4 triumph at no. 2 singles over Dylan Euzarranga.

Earlham men's tennis advances to the 2019 HCAC Men's Tennis Tournament as the no. 2 seed, and will play on Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m. against the winner of Friday's opening round match between the no. 3 and the no. 6 seed. All tournament matches will take place at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
