RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College women's soccer opened its 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a 2-0 loss to Mount St. Joseph University, Saturday afternoon at Matlack-Messer Stadium.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening half, despite Mount St. Joe's holding a 14-0 advantage in shots taken over the first 45 minutes.
The Lions finally broke through in the 47th minute when Madeline Rechel found the back of the net on an unassisted score.
MSJ doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 76th minute, thanks to a goal from Brooke Chaille.
Becca Hancock got the start in goal and made five saves over 54:16 played. Mel Johnson played the final 35:44 and was credited with three saves. Megan Gilpin charted a single save in the Mount St. Joseph goal.
Earlham women's soccer returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they host Transylvania in an HCAC matchup at 3:30 p.m. at Matlack-Messer Stadium.
