RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College volleyball team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a trio of matches this weekend. The Quakers will face LaRoche College and Oberlin College at LaRoche on Saturday followed by an away contest at the University of Pittsburgh - Greensburg on Sunday.
The Teams: Earlham, LaRoche, Oberlin and Pitt. Greensburg. The Quakers are 6-3 this season after a sweep of the University of Cincinnati Clermont on Tuesday. The Redhawks are 2-9 overall and have not won a set in four matches while the Yeowomen are 5-2 and coming off a four-set win over Marietta College. The Bobcats are 1-8 overall with the lone win coming in a five-set match over Albright College.
The Coaches: Lauren Horton enters her fourth year at Earlham and third season leading the volleyball program. The IU-East alumna was a four-year starting setter for the Red Wolves and a three-time All-American. She holds the distinction of being the NAIA's all-time assists leader for the rally-scoring era. Nicole Bajuszik has coached at LaRoche for four seasons while Erica Rau is in her seventh season as Oberlin's head volleyball coach. Kylynn Smith led Pitt.-Greensburg to an 8-21 record in her first year as head coach in 2016.
The Players: The Quakers have relied on a three-headed offensive attack through the first nine matches of the 2017 season. Junior Ashleigh Burton and freshmen Carly Federinko and Julia Stewart all have over 85 kills and average over 3.00 kills per set. Sophomore setter Lauren Jackson dishes out 9.66 assist per set while junior libero Megan Hedinger digs up over five attack attempts per set. Laura Neath leads a LaRoche offense to the tune of 75 kills and 2.34 kills per set. Samantha Lam quarterbacks Oberlin's offense as she dished out 10.22 assists per set while Erica Bosh solidifies the Bobcats' back row with 4.74 digs per set.
Recent History: Earlham has faced all three opponents it will be playing this week since joined the HCAC prior to the 2010 season. The Quakers beat LaRoche 3-1 and fell to Pitt.-Greensurg 3-0 in 2011. Earlham is 2-3 against Oberlin.
Ruling Richmond: For the first time, Earlham has the best collegiate volleyball team in Richmond. The Quakers defeated IU East in five sets at the Quaker Classic last weekend.
Elusive Seventh Win: Earlham has equaled its wins total from the entire 2016 season (six). The Quakers have not won seven matches in a season since going 13-16 in 2007.
