GREENCASTLE, Ind-Day one of the Dewpauw Invitational ended in disappointment for Earlham Women's volleyball. The Quakers began the competition against the Muskingum University Muskies, and ended the day against Concoridia Chicago.
Earlham vs. Muskingum
Muskingum rallied past the Quakers in their first match of the day with a three set win.
Offensive struggles caused Earlham to be unable to overcome deficits in each set. Through three sets Earlham was able to spread the ball evenly, giving seven different Quakers at least three kills. Lauren Jackson added 21 assists to her collection.
Set one ended 17-25, set two's score was 20-25, and the final set was 19-25 all in favor of Muskingum.
Earlham vs. Concordia Chicago
Four sets were marked the competition between the Quakers and Chicago Concordia in the second match of the day for Earlham. The Cougars' defense outmatched the Quaker offense, never allowing them to get above a .130 hitting percentage in any set.
Concordia Chicago's success can be attributed to their few mistakes. In sets one through four, the Cougars only had one, three, eight and 4 errors to Earlham's five, seven, eight and seven respectively.
The Quakers only win came in the third set where they held the Cougars to a .018 hitting percentage. On 56 attacks from Concordia, only nine registered as kills. The set ended 26-24 in favor of Earlham.
Day two of the Depauw Invitational resumes tomorrow at 10am, where Earlham will be competing against Millikin.
