RICHMOND, Ind. – For the first time since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Earlham College volleyball team will be playing a post-season match – which will be taking place on Earlham's home court.
Earlham earned the no. 3 seed with a 6-3 HCAC record, and its first HCAC tournament berth since joining the conference in 2010, and will host no. 6 seed Anderson University in a 2018 HCAC Volleyball Championship Opening Round match on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Druley Performance Gym.
The match is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
Earlham earned its post-season slot with last Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Rose-Hulman, and clinched the home-court advantage for the opening round with Saturday's decisive 3-0 triumph over Bluffton. The Quakers have a 19-11 overall record heading into Tuesday night's regular season finale against No. 3 Wittenberg University – the most wins for the program since 1991 (22-16).
"Our finish this season speaks volumes to the hard work and commitment of my student athletes this season," said Lauren Horton, Earlham's head women's volleyball coach. "Heading into last season, we had never won a conference match, and now we're third and are hosting the first round of post season play... and the girls have earned it."
"This team has found success because they have trusted the process. There is no substitute for the hard work it takes to be successful, and these ladies have not cut any corners to get to where they are now," said Horton.
Earlham will host an Anderson squad that enters the tournament with an 11-16 overall record, 3-6 in the HCAC. The Quakers posted a 3-1 win over the Ravens in the two teams' previous meeting barely a week ago in Anderson, Ind.
The matchup will be a clash of two teams whose late-season fortunes have gone in opposite directions. While the Quakers have won five of their last six matches, including a dethroning of then-first place Rose-Hulman last Wednesday, the Ravens have dropped five of their last six with the lone victory coming against a Defiance squad that trudged its way to a 5-19 finish.
An admission fee will be charged for Wednesday night's HCAC tournament match. Admission will be $8 for adults, $5 for seniors (65-and-older) and students, and free for children 10-and-under.
Students, faculty, and staff from Earlham and all other HCAC institutions will be admitted free upon showing a valid institutional ID.
