Ohio Wesleyan Defeats Earlham 20-7

DELAWARE, Ohio A rough stretch early in the second quarter was too much for the Earlham College football team to overcome on Saturday as the Quakers fell 20-7 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

After scoring on the second play of the second period of the North Coast Athletic Conference contest, the Bishops (3-6, 3-3) added two more touchdown over the next four minutes to take a 20-0 lead.

During the critical stage of the game, Earlham ran five plays and gained four yards, which led to Ohio Wesleyan's opportunities. The score stayed at 20-0 until the final moments of the opening half.

With four seconds remaining, Earlham's Dakota McElley blocked a punt by Ohio Wesleyan's John Romano and it was picked up by Kevin Powers, who scampered 15 yards for a score. Max Crumley-Effinger's extra point kick made it 20-7 at intermission.

Earlham was able to move the ball offensively in the third quarter, but the Quakers were not able to get into the end zone. The Quakers had 99 yards of total offense in the first half before gaining 80 yards in the third period. For the game, the Quakers ended with 243 yards.

Nick Cummings led the Quakers with 63 yards rushing in 12 attempts. James Mees, who split time with Dorian Jenkins at quarterback, ran for 43 yards on 14 carries.

Mees was 5-of-11 for 46 yards, while Jenkins completed 2-of-8 for 17 yards.

Jake Carr and Cale Gulliford led the Earlham defense with 10 tackles each, while Adam LaFollette and Ben Randall finished with nine tackles apiece.

The Quakers (4-5, 2-4) finish the season next Saturday at Denison University. The NCAC contest begins at 1 p.m.
