Quakers Face Rose-Hulman to Begin Season

RICHMOND, Ind. — A slow start had the Earlham College football team behind early and the Quakers couldn't recover as the squad opened in the season with a 61-24 loss to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Darrell Beane Stadium.

 

The Engineers built a 14-0 in the first quarter before the Quakers got on the scoreboard in the second period. Earlham quarterback Dorian Jenkins found Chris Owens for a 27-yard scoring pass with 12:25 remaining in the half.

 

Unfortunately for the Quakers, the Engineers (1-0) scored 28 straight points to take a 42-7 advantage with 49 seconds before intermission. Earlham responded with a quick touchdown with six seconds remaining in the half when Jenkins completed a 25-yard strike to James Rinker.

 

In the third period, Earlham's Jake Carr intercepted a pass to set up a 40-yard field goal by Max Crumley-Effinger as the Quakers scored first in the period to make it 42-17.

 

Sean Gardner scored on a 3-yard run in the final quarter for Earlham's last score of the afternoon.

 

Jenkins finished the contest with 13 completions in 24 attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Owens topped the receivers with six grabs for 79 yards and a score.

 

Defensively, Ben Randall led the Quakers with 12 tackles, while Adam LaFollette added nine to the effort.

 

Earlham (0-1) is back at home next Saturday as the Quakers entertain Manchester College. The non-conference contest begins at 1 p.m.
