Quakers Start Season at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College football team opened the season on Saturday at Dension University with a 51-28 loss to the Big Red.

Denison got off to a 21-0 start in the first quarter before the Quakers got on the scoreboard.

Matt Couch tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Jalen Kenner with 2:05 left in the opening period.

The Big Red (1-0) added 10 points in the second quarter to build a 31-6 halftime advantage.

In the third period, the Quakers got on the scoreboard first on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Alonzo Genelin to Adam Jolly at the 13:36 mark. Genelin hooked up with Cody Miller on the two-point conversion to make it 31-14.

The Quakers scored 14 points in the final stanza. Kenner grabbed his second touchdown pass of the contest with a 25-yarder from Genelin with 13:35 to go.

After Denison scored, Junior Jean ran the PAT attempt back for two point for the Quakers with 11:59 left in the contest.

The final score of the game for the Quakers came when Couch found Malcolm Williams for a 40-yard touchdown pass at 1:01.

Couch finished his day with 10 completions in 32 attempts for 147 yards and a pair of scores. Genelin was 8-of-21 for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

Kenner led the Earlham receivers with six grabs for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Lesile Dunlap finished with three cacthes for 91 yards.

Defensively, Kaleb Lingg led the Quakers with 10 tackles, while Lajay Kelly finished with eight stops. Justin Darden had an interception and Alec Dews recovered a fumble.

Earlham (0-1) plays at home next Saturday against Kenyon College. The non-conference contest begins at 3:30 p.m.
