Gene Hambrick was named to the men's and women's tennis coaching staff prior to the 2026-27 season.
A 1973 graduate of Earlham, Hambrick was a two-sport athlete for the Quakers, seeing action in men's and men's basketball. In 2002, Hambrick was inducted into the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame.
When the men's and women's tennis programs returned to campus in 2022, Hambrick was honored by the college with the opening of the Gene Hambrick Varsity Tennis Courts. The courts have been the home of Earlham tennis since hosting their first match in March of 2023.
Gene's joy for tennis, and volunteering in underserved and underrepresented communities led to his help in founding the Amigos Tennis Program in Richmond.
Hambrick spent the first half of his career working for a fortune 500 company, and his own small business. Upon retiring, he chose to focus on higher education as a fundraiser and administrator.
Hambrick returned to Earlham in 2014, and also serves as Director of the Center of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity, Executive in Residence.
Hambrick graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a Master's of Business Administration.
Hambrick was a four-year tennis and three-year basketball player at Earlham. As a tennis player he earned all-conference and all-district honors in 1970-73, while playing at number one singles for three out of his four years. Hambrick recorded two undefeated fall seasons in his first years at Earlham while losing only a handful of matches during his four years. As a starting point guard in basketball, he helped lead his team to a 20-win season during the 1972-73 season under Hall of Fame Coach Del Harris. In addition to his athletics involvement, Hambrick helped start the Cub Scout pack at the Townsend Community Center and was the corresponding secretary for the Black Leadership Action Coalition.
