NO. MANCHESTER, Ind. — A tough first half proved to be too much for the
Earlham College men's basketball team to overcome on Sunday as the Quakers opened the season with a 79-63 loss at
Manchester College.
Manchester (1-0) scored the first two baskets of the non-conference contest and never trailed. The Spartans eventually led 50-29 at halftime.
Earlham fought through the opening stanza getting as close 11-10 when
Shane Heidt hit a 3-pointer at the 14:29 mark.
In the second half, the Quakers outscored the Spartans 34-29. Earlham closed to within 15 points three times with the last coming at 7:20 when
A. J. Sutherlin scored to make it 64-49.
The Quakers had three players in double figures led by Heidt, who finished with 15 points.
Justin Barger added 11 points with Sutherlin tossing in 10 points.
Marty Broderick led the Quakers with seven rebounds, while
Matt Marsh contributed eight points and five rebounds.
For the game, the Quakers were 24-of-62 (38.7 percent) from the floor, while the Spartans made 32-of-61 (52.5 percent).
Earlham (0-1) visits
Franklin College on Wednesday. The non-conference contest gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
