Quakers Pick Up 83-78 Win at Franklin

Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. The Earlham College Men's basketball team had three players in double figures on Wednesday as the Quakers posted an 83-78 win over Franklin College.

Shane Heidt led the Quakers with 26 points, while A. J. Sutherlin added 25. Matt Marsh finished with 12 points. All three efforts were career-high outputs.

“This was a great win,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “It was a solid team effort and everyone contributed. Obviously, Shane and A.J. stepped up for us offensively.”

Kyle Calder added eight points to go with four assists. Marsh and Marty Broderick topped the Quakers with four rebounds each.

The contest was tight through out the first half with both teams holding leads. After Sutherlin tied the non-conference affair at 35-35 with a basket and free throw at the 2:43 mark of the opening period, Earlham was able hold a 6-4 advantage to end the half and lead 41-39 at intermission.

In the second half, neither team would lead by more than four points. Overall, the game was tied 18 times with the last being at the 4:09 mark when the score was 73-73.

Heidt put the Quakers on top with a basket at 3:55. Sutherlin scored Earlham's final bucket with 2:40 remaining to make it 77-74.

The Quakers went 6-for-6 from the free throw line the rest of the way to hold off the Grizzlies (0-1). Heidt, Sutherlin and Marsh nailed two free throws apiece.

Earlham (1-1) travels the University of Chicago on Saturday to participate in the Midway Classic. The Quakers play the host school in the first contest at 7 p.m.
