Early Deficit Hurts Quakers Against Denison

Box Score GRANVILLE, OhioAn early deficit was too much for the Earlham College men's basketball team to overcome on Saturday as the Quakers fell 78-69 at Denison University.

Earlham trailed 8-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference game before Marty Broderick got the Quakers on the scoreboard with a basket at the 15:27 mark of the opening period.

Denison (2-6, 2-0) worked its way to a 27-10 advantage with 8:17 left in the first half before the Quakers cut the deficit to 37-36 by intermission.

The Quakers were able to get closer early in the second half when A. J. Sutherlin converted two free throws to make it 39-32 with 17:56 remaining.

From that point, Denison widened its margin to 15 points several times with the last coming at the 6:15 mark when it was 67-52.

Sutherlin topped the Quakers with 31 points, while Shane Heidt and Ryan Taylor added nine points each.

Heidt contributed six assists and three steals. Justin Barger led the Quakers with six rebounds.

Earlham (3-5, 1-1) visits the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Thursday. The non-conference contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
