Quakers Fall at NCAC Foe Oberlin

OBERLIN, OhioThe Earlham College men's basketball team had a shot to tie Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference contest against Oberlin College, but it was off the mark as the Quakers fell 71-68.

After the game was tied for the 14th time at 65-65, Oberlin finished the game with a 6-3 run that forced the Quakers into looking for a chance to send the contest to overtime.

A. J. Sutherlin led the Quakers with 27 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Calder added 13 points and four assists, while Marty Broderick contributed 12 points and four assists.

The contest was tight early with both teams holding small leads before Calder hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Quakers a 19-15 advantage with the last coming at the 9:09 mark of the opening period.

Oberlin (5-14, 1-9) eventually tied the game at 31-31 with 2:51 left before intermission. From that point, the Yeomen scored seven straight to lead 38-31 at halftime.

In the second half, the Quakers rallied and took a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Ryan Taylor with 13:17 left to play. For the rest of the period the score remained close with Calder tying the game at 65-65 to set the stage for the final moments.

Earlham (3-16, 1-9) visits Wabash College on Wednesday. The NCAC battle gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
