Penalty Kick the Difference for Quakers in Win at Hanover

Box Score HANOVER, Ind. — A first-half goal was all the Earlham College men's soccer team would need on Saturday as the Quakers defeated Hanover College 1-0 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair.

Bannet Asingura (Mbarara, Uganda, United World College USA) scored on a penalty kick at 20:53 to provide what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The score was Asingura's fourth goal of the season as he led the Quakers to their third straight win and fifth victory in the last six matches. It also moved the Quakers into fourth place in the HCAC.

"This was a difficult win on the road against a team that played in the HCAC Championship last year," Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer said. "On Sunday, we play the other team from last year's HCAC finals."

"This is certainly a challenging weekend," Messer added. "But so far, we've put ourselves in a good position."

The Quakers (6-7, 3-1) face HCAC leader Transylvania University (9-2-2, 3-0-1) on Sunday in a makeup contest from last Wednesday when the scoreless match was called at halftime because of a storm. Sunday's match on Matlack Field starts at 3 p.m.

On Saturday, the Quakers led 24-8 in shots against Hanover with an 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Earlham goalkeeper Jonah Kreniske (New York, NY, Martin Luther King Jr. High School) had one save.
