RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's soccer team broke open a close contest with three goals in the second half Saturday afternoon as the Quakers posted a 5-1 win over Anderson University on a muddy Matlack Field.
“We worked hard today to possess the ball and I think we did a nice job,” Earlham Head Coach Jocelyn Keller said. “The speed of play and capitalizing on scoring opportunities in the second half helped us to grasp the lead.”
“The conditions today were not ideal,” Keller added. “We adjusted accordingly and that's important in the game of soccer.”
Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA, Decatur) gave the Quakers an early lead in Earlham's first-ever Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest with a score at 8:13.
Rachel Dana (Columbus, IN, North) was credited with an assist on the play.
Earlham went in front 2-0 when
Allie Zeller (Cincinnati, OH, Amelia) scored off a corner kick by
Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) at 15:27.
Anderson (2-9, 0-2) scored in the second half at 52:03 to close the gap, but the Quakers responded with three unanswered goals to put the match away.
Cate Simmermaker (Louisville, KY, DuPont Manual ) scored for the second match in a row with an unassisted goal at 58:30.
Evelyn Tandy (Crittenden, KY, Walton Verona ) added another quick score at 60:29 to give the Quakers some momentum and a 4-1 advantage.
Kelly Sprague (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Cushing Academy ) assisted on Tandy's goal.
The final score of the contest came at 82:07 when
Paige Thomas (Bel Air, MD, Baltimore Friends School) capped the victory with the first goal of her career.
Lauren Berry (Durham, NC, Carolina Friends) assisted with the score.
The victory was the third in a row for the Quakers since a 0-0 tie with Wittenberg University on Sept. 22.
Earlham led 29-4 in shots and 19-2 in corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ), who was making her first start and second appearance of the season, had three saves.
The Quakers (6-3-1, 1-0) visit Bluffton University on Wednesday. The HCAC match gets underway at 4 p.m.
