BLUFFTON, Ohio — A pair of goals in the first half was all the Earlham College women's soccer team needed on Wednesday as the Quakers defeated Bluffton University 3-1.
With their fourth straight victory, the Quakers (7-3-1) remain unbeaten in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 2-0. Earlham is tied for first with Transylvania University, Hanover College and the College of Mount St. Joseph.
Cate Simmermaker (Louisville, KY, DuPont Manual ) scored for the third straight match to give the Quakers a 1-0 advantage at 16:56 with
Paige Thomas (Bel Air, MD, Baltimore Friends School) assisting on the play.
Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) made it 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season at 24:18.
Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA, Decatur) was credited with the assist as the Quakers led 2-0 at intermission. Duchon, Earlham's all-time leading scorer, now has 48 goals, 27 assists and 123 points in her career.
The Beavers (3-8, 0-3) cut the deficit in half with a goal at 49:33, but the Quakers answered in 17 seconds as Duchon scored an unassisted goal at 49:50.
The Quakers led 22-12 in shots, while both teams had four corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Megan Holthaus (Harrison, OH, McAuley) had three saves for the Quakers.
Earlham returns home for a match on Saturday against Mount St. Joseph. The HCAC contest on Matlack Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
