RICHMOND, Ind. — A quick one-two punch in the first half was all the Earlham College men's soccer team needed on Saturday as the Quakers beat the College of Mount St. Joseph 3-0 on Matlack Field.
Nick Costello (Westwood, NJ, Westwood high School) and
Ameer Yusuf (Ramallah, Palestine, Friends) gave the Quakers an early 2-0 advantage in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match.
Costello scored at 19:31 with Yusuf assisting. Moments later, the duo was at it again as Yusuf scored with Costello picking up the assist at 22:30.
"Mount St. Joseph is a good team," Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer said. "We knew it was going to be a challenge."
"I'm very proud of the way they played hard for 90 minutes," Messer added. "We did a good job of playing together and defensively we were very strong."
Bannet Asingura (Mbarara, Uganda, United World College USA) finished the scoring for the Quakers with an unassisted goal at 89:03.
Earlham led 19-7 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Jonah Kreniske (New York, NY, Martin Luther King Jr. High School) had four saves for the Quakers, while
Jorge Villagran (Guatemala , International - Evelyn Rodgers) stopped a shot late in the contest as the team was credited with a save.
The Quakers (5-7, 2-1) play Transylvania University at home on Wednesday. The HCAC contest begins at 4 p.m.
