RICHMOND, Ind. — A big second half on Saturday afternoon gave the Earlham College women's soccer team its fifth straight win as the Quakers defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph 4-0 on Matlack Field.
The victory has the Quakers one away from equaling the school record of six consecutive wins set in 2008. This is the third time the Quakers have reached five wins in a row, achieving the feat in 1996 and 2007. Earlham is now 8-3-1 overall and still unbeaten in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 3-0.
Cate Simmermaker (Louisville, KY, DuPont Manual ), who was named HCAC Player of the Week back on Monday, continued her hot streak with a goal in four straight contests. After a scoreless first half, Simmermaker scored the game-winner in Saturday's affair at 54:04 with an assist from
Kelly Sprague (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Cushing Academy ).
It didn't take the Quakers very long to add to the margin as
Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) scored at 55:05 with
Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA, Decatur) being credited with the assist.
Doucette then scored her second of the match and eighth of the season at 61:34.
Earlham closed the scoring with Duchon finding the net at 86:30 with
Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) and Doucette assisting on the play. Earlham's all-time leading scorer, Duchon now has 49 goals, 28 assists and 126 points in her career.
Goalkeeper
Megan Holthaus (Harrison, OH, McAuley) had five saves for the Quakers, who led 16-9 in shots. Earlham also had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Quakers are back in action on Tuesday against Transylvania University. The HCAC match on Matlack Field gets underway at 4 p.m.
