Quakers Post 76-70 Victory over Kenyon

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — A couple of long range shots Saturday afternoon gave the Earlham College men's basketball team a boost as the Quakers defeated Kenyon College 76-70 on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

After leading by 14 points early in the second half, the Quakers found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard late in the period.

"Kenyon is a quality team," Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. "We came out and showed a little fire in the first half, but played a little bit on our heels in the second half."

Trailing 64-62 with 3:41 left in the non-conference contest, Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) drilled a 3-pointer to give the Quakers a 65-64 advantage at 2:38. However, the Lords (5-6) answered quickly to grab a 66-65 lead.

On Earlham's next possession, Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) then nailed a trey to give the Quakers the lead for good at 68-66 with 1:39 remaining.

"They hung in there," Justus said. "Colton and Justin hit big threes and then we were good at the free-throw line."

The Quakers finished the game with an 8-for-10 effort from the line. For the entire afternoon, the Quakers converted 23-of-26 free throw attempts.

Quick Start

Earlham got started fast in the contest as they jumped out to a 15-5 lead after Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) scored with 13:36 left in the opening stanza.

The Quakers eventually worked their way to a 12-point margin two times in the first half with the last coming at the 6:46 mark.

Kenyon was able to close the gap with a pair of free throws with four seconds left before intermission, but Bragg took the in-bound pass and went down to Earlham's end a hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Quakers a 41-30 lead at the half.

In the second half, Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) gave the Quakers their largest lead of the day at 46-32 when he scored with 18:20 left to play, but the Lords responded with the next 14 points to tie the game with 12:00 remaining.

At that point, Kenyon was able to open a 53-48 advantage before Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) would eventually hit a pair of free throws to put the Quakers back on top 56-55 with 8:11 left to set the stage for Earlham's winning finish.

The Quakers had four players in double figures led by Bragg, who had 14 points. Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) tossed in 13 points, while grabbing a team-high six rebounds.

Green added 12 points and Bledsoe finished with 11 points. Barger and Broderick each had eight points.

Earlham (2-7) returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 29. The Quakers are at Case Western Reserve University for the two-day Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament. Earlham meets Case Western on the opening night at 8 p.m.

"We've played a tough schedule so far." Justus said. "I'm hoping that this win will carry over."
