OBERLIN, Ohio — An early score was enough on Saturday as the Earlham College men's soccer team defeated Oberlin College to claim the Freedom Trophy for the second straight year.
Ameer Yusuf (Ramallah, Palestine, Friends) found the goal at 21:05 with
Irhad Strika (Bosnia-Herzegovina, United World College Mostar) assisting on the play that turned out to be the game-winner.
“It's our first win at Oberlin since 2002 and it's the first time we have successfully defended the Freedom Trophy,” Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer said.
The Freedom Trophy was established in 2005 by the 1954 Earlham men's soccer team when that squad was inducted into the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame. The series is tied 3-3 with the Quakers winning the last two matches. Earlham won 1-0 a year ago with the other win coming in a 2-1 overtime decision in 2007.
Oberlin (3-7) led 21-6 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks on Saturday as Earlham goalkeeper
Chris Marshall (Highland Park, NJ , Highland Park HS) had nine saves. “Chris played an outstanding match in goal,” Messer said.
Earlham (2-6) plays Cincinnati Christian on Matlack Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
