Injuries Hurt Quakers

DECATUR, Ill. — An injury-plagued Earlham College volleyball team fell twice Saturday at the Slagell Classic hosted by Millikin University.

Millikin defeated the Quakers 25-10, 25-15, 25-18 in the first match, while Clarke University won over 25-13, 25-14, 25-20 Earlham.

Callie Kinsey (Richmond, IN, Richmond), who battled an ankle injury all weekend, led the Quakers with six kills against Millikin and 12 in the Clarke match.

Ashlee Heberger (Fairport, NY, Fairport) topped the squad with 17 assists against Millikin and 16 against Clarke.

Jazmyn Corlew led the Quakers with three blocks against Millikin, while she had 13 digs against Clarke.

The Quakers had starters Sadie Harmeyer (Connersville, IN, Lincoln) and Andrea Thompson (McCordsville, IN, Muncie Burris) miss matches during the two-day event.

“There are moments in a season that can define a team,” Earlham Head Coach Natalie Alred said. “We are definitely have one of those times right now. We have bonded together through this adversity and this will make us stronger down the road.”

“Several players had to step up the weekend,” Alred added. “Every time we had an injury we could have complained, but this group of young players didn't do that. I asked them to play hard and from the heart. They certainly did that and I am very proud of how they adapted.”

Earlham (3-12, 0-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) visits Defiance College on Wednesday. The HCAC contest gets underway at 7 p.m.
