Late Goals Help EC Beat Wilmington in Quaker Bowl

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's soccer team grabbed the momentum late in Wednesday's match and would not relinquish it as the Quakers posted a 2-0 victory over Wilmington College on Matlack Field.

With the non-conference affair scoreless, Wilmington (5-3-1) had an opportunity on a direct kick from 25 yards, but Earlham goalkeeper Megan Holthaus (Harrison, OH, McAuley) snatched the ball for a save at 80:31.

Just 30 seconds later, Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA, Decatur) had a shot for Earlham, which was saved by the Wilmington goalkeeper.

But at 81:46, Earlham finally got on the scoreboard in the Battle for the Quaker Bowl when Cate Simmermaker (DuPont Manual ) drilled a 35-yard blast from the left side just under the crossbar.

Earlham kept attacking and eventually Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) scored to make it 2-0 with an assist from Holland Rausher (Durham, NC, Carolina Friends) at 86:01.

Earlham led 10-7 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks. Holthaus had three saves for Earlham, which has not allowed a goal in its last four matches. During that stretch Earlham is 3-0-1 with the other two wins coming over Albion College and Oberlin College. The tie was at Wittenberg University.

Earlham (5-3-1) faces Anderson University at home on Saturday. The first-ever Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match for the Quakers begins at 2 p.m.
