BLUFFTON, Ohio — The Earlham College men's basketball team got off to a slow start on Saturday as the Quakers fell 73-49 to Bluffton University.
Kyle Tucker (Vincennes, IN, Lincoln) scored the first basket of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest, but Bluffton (11-4, 4-4) responded with 15 straight points to lead 15-2 with 12:51 left in the opening period.
Earlham eventually put together a 6-0 run that ended with
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) scoring at the 10:17 mark to make it 15-8.
Bluffton answered to widen the margin and the Quakers would cut their deficit to six points twice before intermission. The last time came after
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) hit a 3-pointer with 4:17 left to make it 22-16.
The Beavers led 34-19 at halftime. In the second half, the Quakers got as close as 14 points two times.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) scored with 12:57 remaining in the contest to make it 44-30.
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) led the Quakers with 12 points, while
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) added 10 points.
Tucker finished with eight points and a team-high five rebounds. Bledsoe and Broderick tossed in six points each.
The Quakers (2-13, 0-8) travel to Transylvania University on Wednesday. The HCAC game gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
