EC Falls in HCAC Tourney Opener

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's soccer team had its season come to an end on Wednesday in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Bluffton University, the No. 4 seed, won 3-2 over the top-seeded Quakers on Matlack Field.

The Beavers (11-6-1) got a goal in the first half from Taylor Fultz at 24:19 to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Fultz added another goal at 48:26 to make it 2-0.

Ikumi Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) closed the gap for the Quakers with her first score of the contest at 59:27 with an assist from Paige Thomas (Bel Air, MD, Baltimore Friends School).

Bluffton scored its final goal of the afternoon at 66:14 when Kourtney Lewis was able to get a shot over Earlham goalkeeper Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ).

Doucette got the Quakers back to within a goal when she scored at 81:38. Annie Frodeman (Denton, TX, Guyer) had an assist on the play.

From that point, the Quakers had two scoring opportunities, but both attempts were missed over the goal.

The Quakers had a 14-10 edge in shots and led 5-1 in corner kicks.

Franks, one of four Earlham seniors on the field for the final time, had three saves for the Quakers. The other seniors playing their last match were Kelly Sprague (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Cushing Academy ), Evelyn Tandy (Crittenden, KY, Walton Verona ) and Holland Rausher (Durham, NC, Carolina Friends).

Earlham finishes the fall at 11-6-1 with an 8-1 record in the HCAC, which was good enough for the Quakers to share the regular season title for the second straight year. The Quakers also ended the season ranked No. 10 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes Region poll.
