GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College men's basketball team played a tight contest at Denison University on Sunday afternoon as the Quakers fell 72-61 to the Big Red.
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led the Quakers with 21 points, while Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) finished with 13 points and Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) tossed in 10 points.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) led the Quakers with six rebounds and four assists.
The Quakers grabbed an early 4-0 advantage before Denison went on a 7-0 run to take the lead.
Bragg tied the game 7-7 with a 3-pointer at the 13:59 mark. He followed that shot with a basket at 13:30 to put the Quakers on top 9-7.
The teams exchanged small leads before Green drilled a 3-pointer to put the Quakers in front 17-15 with 11:09 remaining in the opening period.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Denison scored nine straight points to retake the lead 24-17 with 8:16 to go.
However, Earlham was able to come all the way back to take a 27-26 lead on a 3-pointer by Green at 4:35.
Denison finished the half with a 7-3 run to hold a 33-30 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) scored the first basket to bring the Quakers to within 33-32 before Denison worked its way to a 6-point lead.
Later in the half, Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) nailed a 3-pointer with 14:44 remaining in the game as Denison led 41-40.
After the teams swapped baskets, Rusk hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Quakers a 49-48 lead with 9:09 left.
Dension (1-2) scored nine points in a row to build a 57-49 lead with 6:29 to go. From that point, Denison was able to maintain its advantage the rest of the way.
The Quakers (0-3) return to action on Saturday at Trine University. The non-conference affair starts at 5 p.m.
