ANGOLA, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team opened play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference/Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge on Saturday against the host school Trine University.
Trine defeated the Quakers 71-59 in the non-conference contest in Hershey Hall.
Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) and
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) led the Quakers with 10 points each, while
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) and
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) added eight points each.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) topped the Quakers with seven rebounds with
Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) grabbed six rebounds. Green finished with a game-high five assists.
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) ended the game with six points, while
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and Calder added five points apiece.
Early Deficit
Trine (2-2) jumped out to a 10-0 advantage before the Quakers were able to answer. A 3-pointer by
Marq Dixon (Indianapolis, IN, Pike) closed the gap to 13-10 at the 13:16 mark.
The Thunder scored the next eight points to lead 21-10 at 10:22. Calder ended the run when he hit a 3-pointer at 9:54 to make it 21-13.
The Quakers got to within seven points twice in the first half with the last time coming at the 7:16 mark when Bledsoe scored to make it 24-17.
Trine worked its way to a 31-17 lead before the Quakers scored five points in a row capped by a 3-pointer by Rusk to make it 31-22 with 3:41 left in the half.
By intermission, Trine led 37-25.
In the second half, Taylor knocked down a 3-pointer for the initial basket of the frame. From that point, Trine went on a 9-2 run to lead 46-30 with 16:21 remaining in the game.
The Quakers cut the margin to nine points on four different occasions with the last coming on a basket by Green at the 8:44 mark.
Earlham (0-4) finishes the weekend on Sunday with a contest against Kalamazoo College (0-3) at 2 p.m. Kalamazoo lost 71-67 on Saturday afternoon to Manchester College (2-3), which is the other HCAC team competing in the two-day affair.
