Quakers Face Kalamazoo in HCAC/MIAA Challenge

ANGOLA, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team battled Kalamazoo College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference/Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge on Sunday with the Quakers falling short 87-72.

The Quakers had three players in double figures in the contest at Trine University with Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) leading the way with a career-high 20 points. Calder scored 16 points in an 87-79 overtime win at Rhodes College on Nov. 28, 2009.

Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) had 18 points and a team-high three assists, while Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) added 11 points.

Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) and Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) led the Quakers with five rebounds each.

Broderick started the scoring on the day with a basket at 19:38 to give the Quakers an early lead.

Kalamazoo (1-3) eventually worked its way to a 24-13 advantage in the opening stanza before the Quakers were able to bounce back.

Taylor tied the non-conference contest at 31-31 when he scored at the 4:07 mark. Barger followed with a 3-pointer and the Quakers led 34-31 with 3:35 left in the first half.

With a 7-0 run to finish the period, Kalamazoo led 38-34 at intermission.

In the second half, the Quakers scored on their first two possessions to take a 39-38 lead when Green hit a basket at the 18:48 mark.

Kalamazoo scored eight straight points to regain the lead 46-39 with 16:24 left.

The Quakers reponded with a run of their own with Taylor's 3-pointer making it 46-46 followed by Calder's basket giving the Quakers a 48-46 advantage with a basket with 15:13 to go.

Moments later, Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 49-49 with 13:12 remaining.

From that point, Kalamazoo scored nine in a row to take the lead for good.

The Quakers would close the gap to three points twice with the last time coming on a basket by Calder at the 7:17 mark.
 
Earlham (0-5) stays on the road for its next contest at DePauw University on Wednesday. The non-conference game begins at 6 p.m.
