GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team had five players in double figures as the Quakers battled DePauw University on Wednesday night.
The Tigers won the non-conference affair in Neal Fieldhouse 78-74.
"I feel that we played well enough to win," Earlham Head Coach Marcus Gill said. "It was just a matter of execution late the game."
"Also giving up six 3-pointers in first half hurt," Gill added. "We gave up just one in the second half, but we missed some key one-and-ones."
Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) led the Quakers with 15 points, while Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) and Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) tossed in 14 points each.
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) and Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) finished with 10 points apiece.
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) topped Earlham with six rebounds with Bledsoe pulling down five rebounds. Calder handed out five assists.
The Quakers, who trailed by as much as 14 points in the second half, cut the deficit to two points twice with e last time coming with just four seconds remaining when Calder it a 3-pointer.
Early Advantage for Quakers
Earlham led during the early portion of the contest and held a 15-9 advantage when Taylor scored at the 14:13 mark of the opening stanza.
DePauw (4-1) rallied to tie the game at 15-15 at 13:06, but the Quakers were able to stay on top 28-27 when Bragg scored with 5:47 left in the half.
From that point, DePauw ended the half with a 14-2 run to lead 41-30 at intermission.
In the second half, the Tigers were able to maintain their margin and lead 58-44 at 11:58.
Earlham reponded and closed the gap to 62-56 when Green drilled a 3-pointer with 7:20 left to play.
The Quakers continued to rally and Calder made it 73-71 when he scored with 26 seconds remaining.
The Tigers held off the Quakers in the final moments by hitting 5-of-6 free throws.
Earlham (0-6) starts play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The contest gets underway at 3 p.m.
