Late Shot Beats EC

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — After leading the entire second half on Saturday, the Earlham College men's basketball team ended up three seconds short as the College of Mount St. Joseph posted a 68-67 win over the Quakers.

David Mann's 3-pointer with three seconds remaining was the difference in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) led the Quakers with a career-high 25 points, which topped his previous best of 21 at Denison earlier this season. He also added three assists.

Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) contributed 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kyle Tucker (Vincennes, IN, Lincoln) finished with the first double-double in his career with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) tossed in 11 points.

The game was tight early has both teams held small leads. The contest was tied 14-14 when the Lions (4-17, 2-12) scored five straight to go on top 19-14 with 5:57 left in the opening period.

Later in the first half, Taylor drilled a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions that put the Quakers 26-23 with 2:13 to go.

Bragg added a basket and two free throws to give the Quakers a 30-23 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Taylor was at it again with a 3-pointer that gave Earlham its widest margin of the day at 37-25 at the 15:55 mark. Unfortunately for the Quakers, the Lions would cut into the lead and eventually tied the game at 44-44 with 10:59 remaining.

Earlham would, however, bounce back to regain a 55-44 lead after Bragg hit two free throws with 6:14 left. From that moment, the Lions worked their way back into contention and eventually to the lead in the final seconds.

The Quakers (2-19, 0-14) visit Defiance College on Wednesday. The HCAC game gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
