DEFIANCE, Ohio — A 3-pointer with one second remaining put the Earlham College men's basketball team on the wrong side of the scoreboard on Wednesday night as Defiance College defeated the Quakers 66-65.
The Quakers were on top 65-61 after
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:20 left in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Logan Wolfrum followed with a basket at the 1:02 mark to cut Earlham's advantage to 65-63. After the Quakers missed a shot, Wolfrum hit the game-winning trey for Defiance (7-9, 3-6) with one second left.
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) led the Quakers with a game-high 21 points. He also had three assists and a pair of steals.
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) tossed in 11 points and led the Quakers with nine rebounds. Broderick and
Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) finished with seven points each. Calder topped the Quakers with six assists.
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) contributed six points each.
Earlham fell behind early in the contest at 9-2 with 15:49 left in the opening period, but the Quakers were able to rally and eventually tie the game when Bragg scored at 9:29.
Eric Messer (Indianapolis, IN, International) gave the Quakers their first lead when he drilled a 3-pointer with 9:01 on the clock.
After the game was tied at 19-19, the Quakers built a 29-22 advantage late in the first half before heading into the intermission with a 29-26 margin.
In the second half, the contest remained tight and was tied at 46-46 for the fifth time in the game with 9:50 left to play.
The Yellow Jackets scored the next seven points to go on top 53-46 at 7:39.
Earlham was able to respond again and when Barger nailed a 3-pointer at the 3:55 mark, the Quakers led 58-57.
Moments later, Rusk hit a 3-pointer and Earlham was in front 64-59 with 1:59 remaining.
After Broderick made his free throw, Wolfrum hit the final two baskets of the game to give Defiance the victory.
The Quakers (0-16, 0-9) return to action Saturday at Franklin College. The HCAC contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
