RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College men's soccer team battled Manchester University on Saturday as the two squads finished with a 3-3 tie.
Earlham led 3-1 at halftime before the Spartans (5-11-1, 3-3-1) rallied with a pair of goals in the second period of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Matlack Field.
In the two overtime sessions, the Quakers had a 6-0 advantage in shots, but couldn't get a score.
Evan Elko (Summit, NJ, Summit HS) gave the Quakers an early lead as he excited the Homecoming Weekend crowd with a score at 9:16 with
Jacob Ebbs (Brookline, MA, Brookline) assisting on the play.
After Manchester tied the contest at 17:37, Ebbs scored twice for the Quakers with the first one coming at 39:31. The second goal was at 42:37 with an assist from
Ibrahim Diarra (Brazzaville, Congo, International).
The Spartans scored at 52:41 of the second half before getting their final goal on a penalty kick at 77:20.
Earlham led 21-15 in shots, while the Spartans led 6-3 in corner kicks. Earlham goalkeeper
Chris Marshall (Highland Park, NJ , Highland Park HS) had two saves for the Quakers.
The Quakers (3-8-5, 1-1-5) play at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday. The HCAC contest gets started at 7:30 p.m.
On a historical note, the five ties in a season are a school record for the Quakers. Earlham had four ties in 1973 (7-4-4), 1988 (11-5-4) and 1990 (5-9-4).
