RICHMOND, Ind. — A fast start was just what the Earlham College men's basketball team needed on Sunday.
And the Quakers did it as they posted a 76-55 victory over Oberlin College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
"By starting four first-year players, it was important that we got off to a good start and we did," Earlham Head Coach Marcus Gill said. "Our biggest key was to focus on defense and rebounding and just let our offense come to us."
After Oberlin (0-2) had a 3-pointer to begin the contest, the Quakers put together an 11-0 run that was capped by a trey by
Iman Sharif (Wyoming, MI, Rogers) with 16:44 left in the first half.
The Quakers didn't stop there as they continued to increase their margin. When
Blake Welch (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) scored at the 13:50 mark, the Quakers led 21-8.
"It was a great total team win," Gill said. "The difference today was that we made shots and we didn't do that against Denison on Saturday."
Jack O'Flaherty (Sheridan, IN, Sheridan), who led the Quakers with 25 points, gave Earlham its largest lead of the first half when he hit a pair of free throws to make it 33-14 with 7:15 remaining.
By intermission, the Quakers were able to maintain their distance from the Yeomen to hold a 42-28 advantage.
In the second half, Oberlin was able to narrow the gap to 48-36 with 15:59 left in the game, but that was a close as the Yeomen could get.
In addition to his game-high scoring total, O'Flaherty grabbed five rebounds.
Sharif and
Tyler Lewers (Indianapolis, IN, Gary West) finished with nine points each, while Welch tossed in eight points.
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) had seven points to go with a team-high seven rebounds.
Kristian Barden (Detroit, MI, Pershing) have five points, six rebounds and three blocks.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) had five rebounds and three assists.
Earlham (1-2) entertains Trine University on Saturday on the first day of the HCAC/MIAA Challenge. The contest gets underway at 4 p.m.
