RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team opened play in the HCAC/MIAA Challenge on Saturday with an 88-61 loss to Trine University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Jack O'Flaherty (Sheridan, IN, Sheridan) led the Quakers with 17 points and five rebounds.
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) finished with 15 points and four rebounds.
Blake Welch (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) contributed six points and four rebounds, while
Phillip Boone (Detroit, MI, Renaissance) pulled down five rebounds.
Earlham led early in the contest behind O'Flaherty, who drilled three 3-pointers as the Quakers built a 15-7 advantage with 14:04 left in the first half.
The Thunder closed the gap to 15-11 at 11:39. By the 9:46 mark, Trine led 18-17.
Iman Sharif (Wyoming, MI, Rogers) scored at 8:57 to put the Quakers back in front 19-18. However from that point, Trine ended the period with a 21-8 run as the Thunder led 40-26 by intermission.
In the second half, Trine was able to maintain its 14-point margin with 11:51 left as the Thunder led 57-43. From there Trine was able to widen the gap.
The Quakers (1-3) face Kalamazoo College (0-1) on Sunday as the HCAC/MIAA Challenge concludes. The contest gets underway at 4 p.m.
Manchester University (3-1) and Trine (2-1) meet in the other affair that begins at 2 p.m. Manchester defeated Kalamazoo on Saturday 95-83 in double overtime.
