CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College men's basketball team started its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday as the Quakers were defeated by the College of Mount St. Joseph 87-71.
Jack O'Flaherty (Sheridan, IN, Sheridan) led the Quakers with 21 points, while
Kristian Barden (Detroit, MI, Pershing) finished with a double-double as he totaled 12 points, 12 rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) tossed in 11 points with six rebounds.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) contributed eight points.
Rusk gave the Quakers an early 3-2 lead as he drilled a 3-pointer at the 18:38 mark of the opening period.
The Lions (3-2, 2-0) responded with five straight points before the Quakers tied the contest twice with the final time at 16:15 when O'Flaherty made it 9-9 with a basket.
From that point, the Lions grabbed the lead and widened the gap to 48-31 by halftime.
In the second half, Mount St. Joseph built a 67-46 advantage with 11:55 remaining.
The Quakers were able to within 11 points twice with the last time coming on a pair of free throws from O'Flaherty with 3:16 to go.
Earlham (1-6, 0-1) is at Transylvania University for a HCAC contest on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
