Quakers Play Final Game of 2012

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — A four-minute offensive dry spell was the difference on Sunday as the Earlham College men's basketball team fell 74-68 to Kenyon College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

After Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) drilled a 3-pointer to give the Quakers a 58-57 advantage with 4:13 remaining in the non-conference contest, Kenyon scored the next 11 points to build a 68-58 lead with 59 seconds left.

Tyler Lewers (Indianapolis, IN, Gary West) broke the Kenyon run with a basket with 42 seconds on the clock to make it 68-60.

From that point, the Quakers were able to cut the deficit to 71-68 with 10 seconds to go when Rusk hit his eighth trey of the affair.

The Lords (6-5) were able to put the game away by making 3-of-4 free throws in the final 10 seconds.

Rusk topped the Quakers with a game-high 24 points as he hit 8-of-10 from behind the 3-point line. Lewers was next for the Quakers with 20 points and four assists off the bench.

Vadial Jett (Richmond, IN, Richmond) tossed in nine points for the Quakers, while grabbing seven rebounds. Kristian Barden (Detroit, MI, Pershing) led the Quakers with nine rebounds and five blocks to go with six points.

The game was tight early in the first half before Kenyon was able to build a 15-8 lead at the 14:06 mark.

The Quakers were able to fight back to take a 24-22 lead when Rusk hit a 3-pointer at 9:12 left in the opening period.

The Lords responded and eventually led 38-34 by halftime.

In the second half, Kenyon widened its margin to 42-34 before the Quakers started the road back. A pair of free throws by Blake Welch (Lynn, IN, Randolph Southern) tied the game at 55-55 with 4:50 remaining in the game to set the stage for the finish.

Earlham (1-10) returns to action on Wednesday at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game begins at 7:30 p.m.
